 Legislative Updates

HAPPY 2020! CHANGES FOR THE NEW YEAR!!

MINIMUM WAGE

Our minimum wage in Montana is now $8.65 per hour and yes that is higher than the Federal, so in that case you use the state mandated minimum wage.

FLSA CHANGES

Minimum salary threshold changed from $455 weekly to $684 weekly ($35568 annually). Visit this link for more information on the changes: https://www.dol.gov/whd  Also look for DOL FAQ sheets for each exemption to help you make sure your employees are correctly categorized. There is a FAQ sheet entitled: Fact Sheet: Final Rule to Update the Regulations Governing the Regular Rate under the FLSA. This FAQ sheet explains all the ins and outs of the new rule including things you can use to determine a final employee salary,

NEW W-4 FORM

All new hires as of 1/1/2020 must use the new W-4 and as always, you should give them the information on filling it out, but do not help them do so! Give your employees access to this link and it will give them information and instructions for filling out the new form.

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/faqs-on-the-2020-form-w-4

Current employees do not have to fill a new W-4 out unless they want to do so, you should give them the option.

ProTip: Give employees a couple of days to get this filled out,
it is a bit more complicated than what we have had before!

I-9 FORM

I have had some questions about a new I-9 form since the one we use is dated with an expiration of 8/31/2019. That form is still the one to use, a new one has not been posted. I will let you know when a new one lands.

Have a great Friday and a fun weekend!
